The Introductory Rites

The first section of the Mass is called the Introductory Rites, which include the following parts:
Beginning with:
  • Entrance Song - we finish gathering while singing to God
  • Greeting ("In the name of the father...") - we continue our prayer
Then one of the following two:
  • Rite of Blessing and Sprinkling Holy Water - we remember our baptism.
  • Penitential Rite (with various options) - we say we're sorry and "kiss and make up"
Then:
  • Gloria ("Glory to God...") - we say or sing about how great God is
  • Opening Prayer ("Let us pray...") - we continue our prayer
This week in Mass, help your child recognize what's happening during the Introductory Rites!

From Papa Francis: The Penitential Rite

We all sin sometimes!  When asked how he would describe himself, Pope Francis said, “I am a sinner. This is the most accurate definition. It is not a figure of speech... .I am a sinner whom the Lord has looked upon.”

But the good news is that we are forgiven!  Later, he added, “I am a sinner, but I trust in the infinite mercy and patience of our Lord Jesus Christ, and I accept in a spirit of penance.”
