Engaging Parents when Engaging Parents is Hard
5/8/20 webinar recorded for NCCL Witness • 50 minute presentation
This year, a pandemic has forced us into the Year of the Domestic Church, whether we liked it or not. The experience is highlighting just how important the role of parents is and how much work we still need to do to coach, equip, and engage parents to share faith with their children. In the video below, find out what we’re learning through our Worship@Home family-led Liturgy of the Word services and other at-home faith formation experiences. We’ll explore the difference between a monopoly model of ministry, a consumer model, and an accompanying model. Gain some fresh ideas for how to motivate parents starting in this time when we can’t meet normally... through to a new normal in which they are true partners in forming their own kids. |
Looking for Family Catechesis during Social Distancing?
As the pandemic has forced us out of our comfort zones, it is time for us to seriously reflect. Now that we can't do catechesis "as usual," we need to be clear about what is most important. Whether you will use limited in-parish gatherings, online Zoom sessions, "homeschooling," or a combination, what do we hope to accomplish?
If what we most care about is actually passing on the faith so children remain Catholic, the crucial ingredient is the parents. It's all about parent-child "faith talk" and interactions. Studies on Catholic disaffiliation keep pointing to this fact. We need to support parents where they are at, not where we wish they would be. THIS DOESN'T JUST HAPPEN. A flashy video or digital resource will not necessarily help. Parents need intentional coaching to help them step into the role of catechist. Our mission has been to thoughtfully and carefully create resources in which this coaching is baked in. Learn more below. |
